Bon exemplaire. *-------* First edition of both volume. Copy with arms of Joseph Bonnier de la Mosson (1702-1744) gilted on covers. He was an art lover and a great collector. His "cabinet" was one of the most spectacular wunderkammer of the eighteenth century. Bibliophile, he had a very beautiful library, particularly rich in works of science and natural history. Illustrated by 2 frontispices and 128 plates. Jan Commelin was director of the garden at a period when it was undergoing substantial enlargement, primarily as a result of plant introductions from the Dutch East Indies and South Africa. "The first volume, on the plants of the East and West Indies, was Jan Commelin's most important contribution to botanical knowledge ; it was brought out postumously by his nephew Caspar. The second volume was by Caspar Commelin and contained an enlargement on some of the notes in Jan's book, with further notes on Africain plants. The original paintings made for the illustrations in these two volumes were mainly the work of Johan and and his daughter Maria Moninckx and may be seen in the Librairy of the Hortus Botanicus in Amsterdam."
