HORTUS SANITATIS

[Strasbourg, Johann Prüss, c. a. 1497]. <> Magnifique édition, illustrée de plus de 1000 bois gravés de ce "Jardin de santé", un encyclopédie médiévale de la Nature : plantes, animaux terrestres, oiseaux, poissons et pierres y sont traités successivement. Seconde ou troisième édition. (Il y a deux éditions chez Johann Prüss, non datées, qui ont été publiées autour de 1497.) Elles suivent la première de Mayence en 1491. L'Hortus sanitatis est la compilation la plus étendue des connaissance en botanique que l'on nomme "herbiers". Il est basé sur le "Gart der Gesundheit" (vers 1485), mais a été presque entièrement réécrit et très augmenté pour ce qui concerne les animaux et les minéraux. Ils n'étaient que schématiquement représenté dans le précédent ouvrage. C'est dans les éditions de Prüss qu'apparaît pour la première fois un grand bois gravé d'un squelette humain et il a été joint dans la plupart des éditions d'herbier qui ont suivies. Livres d'usages, les herbiers anciens sont le plus souvent incomplets. Il manque ici le Traité des urines (cahiers aa6 et bb4) qui n'a jamais été relié dans cet exemplaire et le dernier feuillet ee6 (fin de la table au recto, le verso est blanc) Quelques auréoles dans les marges, salissures sur la reliure, accroc à la coiffe, mais très bon exemplaire grand de marges. *Plus de photos sur demande. *******************ENGLISH***********Splendid edition, illustrated by more than 1000 woodcuts, of this medieval encyclopedia of the natural world. Second or third edition. (There are two undated editions by Johann Prüss, issued around 1497). They follow the first of 1491, in Mainz. The "Hortus sanitatis" is the third and most extensive of the fundamental botanical compilations which are generally now called 'herbals'. The first was the 'Herbarius' of 1484 and the second the enlargement called 'Gart der Gesundheit'. The third form, though based in part on the 'Gart der Gesundheit', was almost entirely rewritten and elaborated upon, especially in the parts on animals, birds, fishes, stones and minerals (all of which were but sketchily represented in the earlier work); the text on herbs too is quite different, each chapter beginning with a description of the plant, its synonyms, and often something about its geographical origin, and ending with a list of the plant’s medicinal virtues in a separate section headed ‘Operationes. The woodcut of an human skeleton appears in the Prüss' editions for the first time in an Herbal, and was added to most editions published after this. It represents, from a graphic point of view, the best that was published of this kind before Vesalius. (Hunt) Most copies of herbals books are incomplete.
