TRENCHANT, Jean

Lyon, Michel Jouve, 1566. *** Le livre de Trenchant est l'un des meilleurs sur l'arithmétique commerciale publié en France au XVIe siècle. La première partie traite des opérations fondamentales avec les nombres entiers et les fractions, la seconde de la règle de trois sous ses diverses formes, et la troisième des propriétés des nombres et présente quelques récréations mathématiques. A la fin, un chapitre contient un traité des changes et la méthode pour calculer avec les jetons. Livre d'usage, toutes les éditions de cet ouvrage sont rares. C'est ici probablement la troisième. "Revue, et augmentée de plusieurs règles et chapitres par l'autheur." La première édition de 1558 n'est connu qu'à un seul exemplaire. (Bayerische Staatsbibliothek) La seconde, de 1561, à peine moins rare, est la plus ancienne que la BNF possède. Brunet V, 936 ne connaissait que l'édition de 1571. Sur le dernier feuillet : "A Lyon, par Ambroyse du Rhône, 1566". La moitié de ce dernier feuillet a été découpé, mais sans manque de texte. (Smith) The book is divided into three parts, the first dealing with the fundamental operations with integers and fractions; the second treats of the rule of three in its various forms; and the third treats of the properties of numbers, including figurate roots, and progressions, and has some work on discount, together with few recreations. It is followed by a chapter on exchange, and an explanation of the method of calculating with counters. Book of use, all editions of this book are rare. This is probably the third. The first of 1558 is known to only one copy (Bayerische Staatsbibliothek). The 1561 edition (2 known copies ?) is the oldest at the BNF. Smith, Rara Arithmetica: A Catalogue of the Arithmetics Written Before the year MDCI, p. 320 had an edition of 1578 and believed our edition of 1566 was the first. On the last page: "A Lyon, par Ambroyse du Rhône, 1566". Half of this last folio has been cut out, but without lack of text, some pages browned pages, but good copy in its first binding. - -.
