The accent was on heredity, toxins (such as alcohol, narcotics, metal poisoning, pellagra, goiter) and 'sympathies,' that is, mental diseases due to primary brain disease. Hysteria, hypochondria, and epilepsy are grouped together, and what appear to be psychoses proper are put in the nex-to-last (fifth) group as 'idiopathic' - a term .. having no meaning but that of a verbal label" - Zilboorg & Henry.
